About Sheltams
Our Story
As the oldest existing newsstand in Los Angeles, Sheltams has remained a fixture thanks to its authenticity, personal service, and enduring love for print. Our shelves are filled with magazines, newspapers, and books spanning every genre and interest — but we’re more than a magazine shop.

Magazines… and More!
Beyond print, Sheltams offers convenient everyday essentials, including:
-
Candy, gum, drinks, and snacks
-
Premium cigars
-
California Lottery tickets
-
Postcards & Los Angeles souvenirs inspired by Hollywood’s golden age
We also house an official USPS location, providing reliable mailing and shipping services right from the Farmers Market. Whether you’re stopping by for a favorite magazine or running an errand, Sheltams blends practicality with classic newsstand charm.
Meet Paul
Paul Sobel, who took over the Farmers Market newsstand in 1976 at just 18 years old, has spent decades turning the stand into a beloved community hub. Named after his sisters, Shelley and Tamara, Sheltams reflects Paul’s philosophy that a newsstand should be more than a retail space — it should be a meeting point woven into the fabric of the Fairfax District and the Original Farmers Market. His commitment to relationships, customers, and the printed word continues to define Sheltams today.
